Worship & Music

Our worship services are paradoxical -- vibrant, participatory, traditional, informal, child-friendly, intellectually challenging, accessible and spontaneous. Together, we are drawn into the ancient-yet-fresh liturgical river of readings, the song, prayer and the rhythm of community. Music helps draw us into the depth of God’s indwelling presence. The thoughts of our foremothers and forefathers in faith are tied to the issues and questions of today, and though we honor two distinct Christian traditions, all is grounded in that which unites us -- Jesus.

The Arts

The arts are another avenue to the divine, and at MoTA we celebrate many artistic forms. Our outdoor labyrinth centers our exterior space, and reminds us of prayerful art from many continents, times and faiths. Our liturgical arts team keeps a fresh array of color and story before us in the worship space. An annual celebration of arts and craft occurs in the month of August, where the art of many members comes together on display.

Welcome To Newcomers

Welcome! You can trust that, as a visitor at MoTA, you will be welcomed as you are. Children and elders are especially celebrated. Play packets are available for children, and large-print bulletins are available as well.

GLBT

MoTA is member of the Community of Welcoming Congregations, and as well is a Reconciling in Christ congregation. We seek to acknowledge and undo the injustice and violence Christians have perpetuated throughout history upon our sisters and brothers who are gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, transgender or queer. As children of God, we believe that God calls us to welcome all people into our community of Christian faith. We affirm our ongoing commitment to be a more inclusive community and to encourage full participation and sharing of our unique gifts in all aspects of our life together.

Inter-faith

We profess that God is bigger than any of us can comprehend or imagine, and in that spirit, we come to our interfaith partners with respect and a yearning to deepen our understanding of the other, in order that we may grow together. Since the violence of September 11, we’ve been in a covenant relationship with Bilal Mosque in Beaverton, committed to prayer, conversation and learning together. We are active in Washington County’s Interfaith Action Network, and Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon.

Service

Our members seek to live lives that are intentional and integrated, not isolated and segmented. Because of this, our ministry showing God’s grace and inclusion happens on the floor of the microchip factory, in the pen with the llamas, in the classroom with the second-graders, in the decisions made in business park offices, in volunteering weekly at Cascades AIDS clinic and in interactions in medical suites, every day. A small fraction of our ministry happens collectively, in such ministries as our monthly meal at the Good Neighbor Shelter for families in Tigard, our weekly presence at the food pantry at St. Matthew’s, our participation in the local Meals on Wheels program and our ongoing contributions of food and resources to serve those in need through Care to Share in Beaverton.
